Successive refinement of information

چکیده
269 Abslruct-The successive refinement of information consists of first approximating data using a few hits of information, then iteratively improving the approximation as more and more information is supplied. The goal is to achieve an optimal description at each stage. In general an ongoing description is sought which is rate-distortion optimal whenever it is interrupted. It is shown that a rate distortion problem is successively refinable if and only if the individual solutions of the rate distortion problems can be written as a Markov chain. This implies in particular that tree structured descriptions are optimal if and only if the rate distortion problem is successively refinable. Successive refinement is shown to be possible for all finite alphabet signals with Hamming distortion, for Gaussian signals with squared-error distortion, and for Laplacian signals with absolute-error distortion. However, a simple counterexample with absolute error distortion and a symmetric source distribution shows that successive refinement is not always achievable.

Successive Wyner-Ziv Coding Scheme and its Application to the Quadratic Gaussian CEO Problem
We introduce a distributed source coding scheme called successive Wyner-Ziv coding scheme. We show that any point in the rate region of the quadratic Gaussian CEO problem can be achieved via the successive Wyner-Ziv coding. The notion of successive refinement in the single source coding is generalized to the distributed source coding scenario, which we refer to as distributed successive refinem...
متن کاملSuccessive Refinement of Abstract Sources
In successive refinement of information, the decoder refines its representation of the source progressively as it receives more encoded bits. The rate-distortion region of successive refinement describes the minimum rates required to attain the target distortions at each decoding stage. In this paper, we derive a parametric characterization of the rate-distortion region for successive refinemen...
متن کاملAdditive successive refinement
Rate-distortion bounds for scalable coding, and conditions under which they coincide with nonscalable bounds, have been extensively studied. These bounds have been derived for the general tree-structured refinement scheme, where reproduction at each layer is an arbitrarily complex function of all encoding indexes up to that layer. However, inmost practical applications (e.g., speech coding) “ad...
متن کاملMechanical Behavior of an Ultrafine/Nano Grained Magnesium Alloy
The application of magnesium alloys is greatly limited because of their relatively low strength and ductility. An effective way to improve the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy is to refine the grains. As the race for better materials performance is never ending, attempts to develop viable techniques for microstructure refinement continue. Further refining of grain size requires, however...
